Bluetooth knows how to find phones, while the location accuracy for it too is more or less decent. However, while the accuracy is decent at the moment, a planned update for Bluetooth will give the it capabilities and power to pinpoint devices’ direction as well as the location down to the exact centimeter.
The Bluetooth special interest group has today announced a direction-finding feature which would allow Bluetooth to determine the direction in which a Bluetooth device is headed. The capability is being added to the core of Bluetooth v5.1. The special interest group believes that the improvement will benefit a wide range of industries.

Right now, Bluetooth location features all into two different camps : proximity or positioning. What proximity does is that it allows the Bluetooth devices to recognize when they are near one another. What positioning does is that it takes the advantage of real-time locating systems in order to pinpoint the exact whereabouts of specific items. And while the accuracy right now is quite good – down to the meter, the new direction-finding feature goes on to merge both of the stated functions and goes on to dramatically improve both.
Combining the proximity and positioning allows Bluetooth devices to determine where the devices are, as well as where they are headed. The result would be centimeter-level accuracy – or a hundred-fold improvement. Impressive, isn’t it?
