MEIZU ZERO, A HUGE FAILURE? TURNS OUT TO BE A PUBLICITY STUNT

Companies strive on innovation, and if it lacks that, it needs to have the reputation to do so (sorry Apple :p). In this extremely crowded market of all sorts of phone, the demand and necessity of innovation is quite high as the race to stand tall above all continues between the manufacturers, especially Chinese ones, who believe that they need to keep working on new things rather than perfect their already-made phones. One such company is Meizu, and it came up with a PORTLESS phone, a little while back. Unfortunately, the world wasn’t ready for that yet.

Doesn’t that look slick!

However, the campaign got less than 30 pre-orders and consequently had to be axed. For Meizu’s part at least, CEO Jack Wong has confirmed to its BBS forums community that the Zero was not much more than a publicity stunt.

“The crowdfunding project is being carried out by the marketing department,” Wong wrote. “The non-porous mobile phone is only a pre-release research project of the development department. We never intended to mass-produce this project.”

A truly uninterrupted design crafted from an all-screen ceramic body, the zero offers promising wireless charging speeds of up to 18W through our patented “Super mCharge Wireless” technology. Meizu zero also features mSound 2.0 In-screen Sound Technology, under-screen fingerprint sensor, virtual side button, eSim and IP68 certification.Multiple 3D arc grinding and polishing steps are used to create smooth edges, and the seamless integration from the fuselage to the curved OLED panel, presenting you the absolutely stunning quality.Adopting “Pressure Sensing Technology”, Meizu zero has created virtual side buttons that power on or off the phone, as well as adjust volume, with just a touch. Virtual button not only relieves pressure on the edge frame, it also tackles the issue of unintentional touches and smoothing its way to earn a better waterproof rating.

Despite the impressive idea, the phone fell short at the execution stage as the world is not yet ready to go completely wireless with wired technology still having the upper hand in terms of transfer speeds whether it be charging speeds or file transfers. One thing that it does is to highlight how innovation comes in the peculiar ways.
