That’s how you can choose the perfect perfume for someone else

That’s how you can choose the perfect perfume for someone else. One of the most popular gifts one can buy for someone else is a perfume or aftershave. But how many of you have had the hideous experience of getting a perfume that just does not smell right? It does not  mean that your other half has terrible taste–perfume is a specific thing to try & get right, & it develops differently on different people’s skin. So, how you avoid buying someone you love a perfume they hate?

Metro.co.uk spoke to Linda Pilkington, who is a perfumer and nose for luxury perfumer Ormonde Jayne. She told us how to avoid the pitfalls of scent shopping saying that i strongly suggest going to a specialist perfume store where the sales assistants can take their time and sit with you.

There in department stores is a lot more pressure, sales assistants are given sales targets & are in competition with each other. All staff in specialty stores are highly trained and any specialist perfumer should ask questions. Who the perfume is for? Not just whether they are male or female & how old they are, but more specific other questions. Is the person you are shopping for a traditional?

Are they some healthy vegetable person, spice lover or some gung-ho about food? What excites them most? What are their favourite colors? Are they sporty persons? All of these are relevant.

What we are doing is putting together perfume portrait of person, from that we can pick three perfumes & they would try it on their own skin. It is really important to try a perfume, to assure that you enjoy the way it smells after alcohol has evaporated and it’s developed on skin.

Linda says that trying a perfume for your boyfriend or girlfriend makes sense because your other half does find your natural smell attractive, which means that you’re likely to have complimentary body chemistry. That would always be better indicator than sales person in the shop. When you buy a perfume it is a good idea to get a sample of the perfume at same time as the full bottle, so that one can try it before committing to it.

Ormonde Jayne specifically would  refund a perfume –making it in to tester bottle–, many retailers & all department stores refuse to. Some stores would not even refund a perfume if box is unopened, because of concerns about the counterfeit perfumes. We do suggest that the person who you are buying the perfume for wears 2ml sample for a couple of days, see how scent develops & whether they do like it. If they do not, it is much easier to return perfume unopened.

While visiting some specific perfume shop would ensure a better service, and mean that your other half does not have the exact same perfume as every one in her office, you can utilize  a lot of this wisdom at your local brand of Superdrug. Also try to remember whether your other half is allergic to any thing, because rash is not romantic, & also make a note of whether they have ethical considerations. No point buying perfect scent if your boo can not wear it because it is made by a company who test on animals.
