Sony phones start getting the Pie update

The Android Pie update has started to roll out for Sony devices, in particular, the Sony XperiaXZ Premium, the Sony Xperia XZ1, and finally, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. The news comes courtesy of the Xperia Blog, over the weekend. Since the news, several users have also gone on to confirm that they have indeed gotten the update, as they went on to show their pleasure right over in the comments.

The build number with which the update comes is 47.2.A.O.306, along with the October 1stsecurity patches, however, what isn’t exactly clear thus far is exactly where the update is rolling out, however, as a result of the comments from those users that have gotten the update, it seems that Vietnam and Singapore are the more popular regions to where the update has arrived. The download package comes in at more than 2.5 gigs of storage.

Coming along with the obvious improvements that the Pie update will bring along with it, Sony has taken things a step further by rolling out a new camera interface – complete with 960fps, super slo-mo at 1080p – HDR video enhancement, and apparently, a selfie camera display flash as well.

However, contrary to many expectations, Sony has not gone on to include the Android Pie gesture controls. This probably will disappoint some fans, though it would seem that Sony is playing it safe, as this isn’t actually a feature which is appreciated universally.

Nonetheless, it’s very refreshing to see Sony update its second-tier devices, because not all smartphone companies give their users such an advantage. As the case goes for the flagship devices of Sony – these devices have already gotten the update, doing so all the way back in October, and as impressive as it sounds, Sony managed to do so before many other OEMs managed to even get their first updates out the door. And while the company has been winning the third-party update race for quite some time now, it all comes as a shame that the company is struggling to sell many of its mobile products. Let’s hope that changes in the future!
