Sony Xperia 1 professional edition – why so expensive

Sony in a world of its own, as the company has made a habit of charging a ridiculous amount of money for its premium flagship smartphones. And while these prices may be justified if these Sony devices have more to offer when compared to the rest of the smartphones out there – that simply isn’t true. The best example of Sony’s bold yet unsuccessful business strategy comes with the Sony Xperia 1 Professional edition.

The device is only exclusively available in Japan, and is also quite similar to the regular Sony Xperia 1 which on its own wasn’t launched too long ago. However though, there still are some upgrades.

Amongst the upgrades is the display. The Sony Xperia 1 Professional edition features with a 4K display that happens to be HDR-ready with a BT2020 color gamut as well as a 10-bit signal support. As it turns out, users will also have the option to customize the color levels in accordance to their liking.

In addition to this, the phone also comes with the Imaging Edge Mobile Transfer and Tagging add-on built-in. As this works with Sony’s imaging software – photos taken by the company’s cameras become much better.

The last upgrade that we see in the device when compared with the regular Sony Xperia 1 is the fact that the device is LAN-ready via its USB-C port. Though a thing to note here is that the cable which is required to make this work will not be included in the box.

The Xperia 1 starts at $950 while this professional version starts at $1316. Putting this price tag into perspective – it is even more expensive than the top of the line Galaxy Note 10 Plus. It’ll be interesting to see exactly how Sony justifies the huge price hike with just some simple upgrades. Regardless however, the phone will be released in Japan on the 25th of October – whether or not it will be available in other regions – we can only wait and see.
