Google testing out automatic car crash detection

Google has in the past developed some really interesting features in the past, which have been exclusive only to the company’s flagship Pixel devices – with these including the likes of Night Sight, unlimited quality photo backup, and more. Now, it looks like Google is set to add yet another feature in the list of exclusivities, as the company is testing automatic car crash detection in Android Q.

XDA-Developers have actually found some references to car crash detection functionality in the Android Q Beta 3 safety hub app. One string goes to state that the function will have the capabilities to “automatically launch an alert activity when the device detects you are in a car crash.”

Other then this, XDA has also gone on to find a string in the app which suggests that the feature will be exclusive only to Pixel devices. And so the many millions of people that use third-party Android phones might miss out on the upcoming feature.

So how will the Safety Hub app detect a car crash? Well, it’s quite possible actually that the feature will go on to harness GPS data in an attempt to determine whether you are in a car, the accelerometer will detect a sudden or indeed violent stop, and a microphone to listen for the sound that a crash may make. It’s also quite likely that such capabilities will be integrated with Google’s machine learning technology.

It’s also important that Google makes sure that such a feature is close to being perfect. After all, a falling phone could quite easily be mistaken for a car crash, couldn’t it?

XDA has noted that the car crash feature could go on to alert emergency services or indeed designated contacts in case of a crash. Considering the fact that almost 1.35 million people every year are killed due to road crashes according to the WHO, such innovation from Google could go on to make quite the difference.
