Punjab Forms JIT to Investigate Recent Riots Following Imran Khan’s Arrest

The recent riots and vandalism that took place in the province of Punjab following the arrest of Imran Khan, the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have caused concern among the citizens of the country. In response, the Punjab government has announced the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the incidents of rioting, burning of Jinnah House, and vandalism of military and civil facilities. JIT to Investigate Recent Riots in Punjab

The decision to form a JIT was made during a meeting held by the caretaker Punjab Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, at the head office of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority to review the province’s law and order situation. The team will investigate the incidents of rioting, burning of Jinnah House, and vandalism of military and civil facilities. The chief executive of the province emphasized that all cases against the “miscreants” would be tried in the anti-terrorism court. He also ordered the speeding up of operations to bring all the perpetrators under the law and conduct geo-fencing of areas where riots took place.

Strict Action Against Perpetrators

The chief executive of the province further added that every miscreant would be brought to justice with evidence, and those who attacked Jinnah House, military, civil and private property would not be spared severe punishment. The JIT will investigate the incidents and present evidence to the court to ensure that justice is served. Naqvi also stated that all educational institutions would resume teaching from May 15, as the situation is improving.

Measures Taken to Restore Law and Order

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr Usman Anwar briefed the meeting about the law and order situation in the province and the actions taken against the rioters. Provincial Information Minister Aamir Mir, chief secretary, inspector general of police, additional chief secretary, additional chief secretary interior, additional IG special branch, CCPO Lahore, additional IGC CTD, secretary law, secretary public prosecution, MD Punjab safe cities authority, commissioner Lahore division, deputy commissioner, and related officials were also present at the meeting. Additionally, all divisional commissioners and RPOs participated in the meeting via video link.
