How bad were the Sony smartphone sales?

Yesterday, Sony went on to announce the company’s quarterly revenue report as far as the first quarter of 2020 goes. Much to the delight of the company, there was some good news in the announcement. However, unfortunately there was also some bad news – primarily surrounding the company’s smartphones sales, which have hit a new record low. bad were the Sony smartphone sales.

In accordance with what the report suggests, there were only around 400,000 Sony smartphones which were shipped in the first quarter of the year. This number is really, really bad. As a matter of fact, the company actually started with a low estimate of 700,000 units shipped for the quarter to begin with, and it couldn’t even much that.

As far as hard facts and comparisons go – Samsung sold in and around 400,000 units of the Galaxy S20 series in a matter of week in the US alone – and this number in fact in its own right showed a weak position for the company as it deals with its own problems in the smartphone department – but clearly, the problems aren’t as bad on that side.

But what’s the matter?

Of course much like any other company, Sony can put much of the blame on the Covd-19 pandemic, however, it’s not like the smartphone department was doing wonders before the pandemic proceeded on to affect the global economy.

Sony has to put a lot of the blame on its own self. This is especially the case when you consider the fact that the company’s newest major product in the Sony Xperia 1 II which was announced back in February is still unavailable to consumers. So like you’d imagine, it’s hard to get those numbers up when consumers don’t even have an option to buy your products.

So far though, it has been the case where Sony is keen to stand tall saying that it will never abandon its smartphone division and will continue to rely on the success and profitability of other departments so as to provide convenience. But of course like any sensible person would think : how long can the company sustain such policies before it all just becomes a ridiculous endeavor?
