UK to Remove Equipment in Relation to Huawei from 5G Networks by 2027

The UK is putting the initial policy it has adopted which allowed Huawei equipment in the non-core part of its 5G networks into reverse gear.

Oliver Dowden, who happens to be the Digital Secretary has gone on to order the removal of all Huawei 5G hardware from UK networks by 2027 – and will proceed on to ban any new 5G equipment that stems from the Chinese company as of the 1st of January, 2021.

The existing limits that are in place with regards to Huawei for “sensitive and critical” network areas will continue to remain in place. While Fiber broadband networks aren’t exactly subject to the very same bans, the UK still happens to be asking companies to avoid buying Huawei products and it also expects a transition to last two years.

Such a decision comes after a meeting held with regards to the National Security Council which proceeded on to determine the US trade ban restrictions on chips – which of course happened to have been implemented in May and going forward meant that it would be “impossible” to guarantee the security of the Chinese company. The company would be in requirement of a “major reconfiguration” with regards to its supply system so as to continue getting the technology that it so requires – all this in accordance with what the government has had to say.

The UK has also gone on to bow to enshrine the new measures in law with the proposition of a telecom security bill as soon as possible. This measure won’t just be implemented for Huawei, but will also make its way towards all the “high risk” equipment makers. Also, legislators would be required to obey more stricter security requirements.

Of course these latest decisions by the government go completely against the stance that it had adopted back in January – where officials came to terms with the decision that Huawei along with other allegedly risky companies could be allowed in non-sensitive parts of 5G networks. However, the government did continue on by saying that the situation would in fact change if Huawei faced more trade bans.
