Will the Mate X finally arrive next month?

Launch for Huawei’s first ever foldable device was set for June of this year, however, in wake of the defects which were highlighted by reviewers with respect to the Galaxy Fold, the launch for the Mate X was delayed. Samsung is now gearing up to launch its very own foldable phone and it seems as Huawei isn’t too far off either – as the company prepares for a potential launch next month.

Richard Yu, who happens to be Huawei’s consumer business CEO told journalists at an IFA 2019 roundtable that the Chinese manufacturer initially wanted to launch the device in August. However, there came several hurdles that the company had to deal with first.

First and foremost, Yu explained that the display of the device required some changes before large volume production took place. While the tweaks were not subject to being disclosed, it’s quite possible that Huawei is following Samsung’s lead by strengthening the foldable screen. These first gen foldable device use plastic displays – which makes way for potential scratches – and so this could be yet another weakness to address.

Yu also said that app support was another challenge that needed to be looked at with regards to the Mate X. He explained that the company was in conversation with developers in making their apps more suitable for the screen size. It was also revealed by the executive that 5G testing was well underway with network partners.

He said : “So maybe next month we can start to sell it globally. We are even considering to upgrade to a new chipset for this phone, the Kirin 990 (sic).”He went on to further clarify on the situation by saying that a Mate X with the Kirin 980 could be launched first, with a version of the device coming with the Kirin 990 soon to follow.
