A Q4 Global Digital Stat report has shed light on users around the world who are currently using the internet. The number of people who use internet and are in-fact online has nearly reached 4.2 billion, which makes about 55 percent of the world’s total population. According to the stat report during the last quarter about 1.5% of the population came online, amounting to 68 million people. For the number of people who have just started using the Internet stands at 284 million which shows that the percentage of population on the Internet is increasing at a fast rate.

For social media alone the number of people using various platforms increased by 10% over the last year, to reach 3,4 Billion people and the number of users who are new to these platforms over the last year is an astonishing 320 million. Furthermore in the case of mobile phone penetration, 5.118 billion people now own a device of their own which represents about 67% of the total world population out of which about 60 % people own their own smartphones which is a surprising reveal and it gets better, Everyday about 100,000 phones are being bought all around the world which shows how much the world now relies on technology and its use. Moreover about 3.179 billion people access social media on smartphones and users also tend to spend a lot of money on mobile phone applications which accounted to $20 Billion over the past three months alone which makes it a revenue of $150,000 per minute, Surprising no?

Over half of the traffic now comes from mobile phones and around 51.6% of the population. Those who use laptops and PC’s is quoted to be about 44.1%.

The average speed of the Internet worldwide remained to be about 47.83 MBPS for down-link as well as 22.99 MBPs for up-link. All in all the goal of bringing the a further One Billion of the population into this technological world seems to be going well, with majority of the users hailing from developing economies found in Asia or Africa, things will however start to get tougher once you start to reach the bottom end of the bucket.
