As Zahid Hamid resigns, Islamabad protesters agree to end sit-in

Following the resignation of Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid, the govt and protesters at Faizabad have reached an agreement to end the sit-in, according to our reliable sources.

As following the agreement, containers around the sit-in site are being moved, shortly all the leaders of the religious parties are likely to make the official announcement to end the sit-in.

As per the agreement, within the duration of 30 days, the government will release the report of the committee set up to probe the change in the amendment to the Finality of Prophethood declaration for electoral candidates in the Elections Act 2017.

According to this agreement, those found responsible are punished under the relevant laws.

The agreement also does include the condition that the protesters of religious parties, arrested since 6th November 2017, will got released and cases against them will be dismissed.

The agreement also states that an inquiry board will be set up to probe the events surrounding the govt action against protesters on 25th November and fix responsibility.

Yesterday, the law minister voluntarily stepped down tendering his resignation to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The resignation is expected to be accepted today.

The resignation of the law minister was the first demand of the Protestants.

The decision does come in the wake of the protests that are continued across Pakistan, following crackdown on Saturday by the police and paramilitary personnel on Islamabad sit-in staged by religious protesters.

The govt of Pakistan tried a lot to negotiate with the protesters while refusing the demand for the resignation of Zahid Hamid (the law minister), but all the talks of negotiations were only made successful with the resignation of the law minister.

Zahid Hamid stated,

“In order to restore peace in the country, I have decided to step down from my position,”.

Senator Raja Zafar-ul-Haq has taken the charge for heading the committee formed earlier by the leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz to fix the responsibility for the introduction of the controversial amendment to the Finality of Prophet hood declaration for electoral candidates.

Federal Minister for Interior Affairs Ahsan Iqbal and Minister for Climate Change Mushahid ullah Khan have also joined the committee that was formed on October 7 to probe the issue. The issue  followed by the committee had attracted backlash from various quarters, even though the mistake was rectified very soon after making the amendment.

The committee headed by the senator is likely to present a report that relates to the controversial amendment to the court.
